VA OFFERS IN-HOME CARE BENEFIT Different from any other VA benefit, the “Aide and Attendance” program provides up to $21,600 per year to a couple for in-home support or care. A veteran must be disabled OR age 65 to be eligible to apply and they must have served during a period of conflict. Service in the combat zone is not required. Three basic eligibility criteria: A. The veteran must have anything other than a dishonorable discharge. B. The veteran must have served on active duty for 90 days with at least one day of active duty occurring during a declared state of war. The periods include: 1. World War II – 12/7/1941 – 12/31/1946 2. Korea – 6/27/1950 – 1/31/1955 3. Vietnam – 8/5/1964 – 5/7/1975 4. Gulf War – 8/20/1990 – present Once an application is approved and funded the current maximum annual allocation of tax free money is: A. Single veteran: $18,234.00 B. Widow: $11,715.00 C. Veteran & Spouse: $21,605.00 Like most government programs, the application process has its quirks and can be very tedious. It normally takes six months to get an application approved, but the good news is that the benefit can be made retroactive. If you have any immediate questions call: Frederick W.
